Project to design, print and sell a moon calendar.
These calendars are something I've liked and used over the years. They have an interesting print shape, due to the restriction of layout options. When you are restricted by months needing to be clearly separated, you don't end up with many options for how to display this information. Rather than trying to get too cleaver or experimental with the display of the data, I decided to stick to the tried and tested layout, and focus my time on design details.
Inputting the data (different shapes of circle depending on different moon phases) was surprinsingly complex and a test of endurance. Once you discover that there aren't a standard amount of days between a full moon and no moon, or even between the half moon states, you find you need a range of options showing between 6 and 9 different shaped waxing/waning moons between the 4 states.
My design preference was to try to lean more towards space travel and sci-fi, than astrological, spiritual look and feel. I have 0 problem with the tradional calendars, and their leanings towards astrological signs, but I felt there was room for this data to be designed more towards the relations we have with the moon and space with regards to mans explorations and sci-fi fantasy.
Due to this, I found I was able to use a font I had recently created in a sketch book, which definetly leaned towards the 60s/70s space travel vision.
